COORE and Prep for Life students who attend Calhoun High School, which houses the district’s special education program, are afforded the opportunity to participate in the Bellmore-Merrick Challenger Sports League.

“The students were especially excited to show off their new Bellmore-Merrick jerseys thanks to the Director of Athletics, Eric Caballero,” said Mike Pisano, a special education teacher and coach.

Over the course of six weeks, the students participated in bowling, basketball and volleyball games at their individual athletic ability level against numerous other school districts including Massapequa, Seaford and Amityville.

“The outcome of the games is not about who wins or loses but the priceless memories that are made,” said Helen Kanellopoulos, assistant director of special education.

This after-school activity allows the district’s COORE and Prep for Life students to interact with each other outside of the school day and meet peers from other districts, Kanellopoulos said.

“The 2016-2017 Challenger Bowling League was an absolute success and a lot of fun was had by all,” said Lisa Naud, a special education teacher and coach. “We are looking forward to an exciting Challenger basketball season.”
