The Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District, in conjunction with local school districts and organizations, will hosts Stephen L. Dewey, Ph.D. who will address the impact of abusive drugs on the human brain on Feb. 16.

Dr. Dewey’s presentation, “The Effects of Drugs of Abuse on the Teen Brain,” will include illicit drugs, prescription drugs, marijuana, synthetic marijuana, energy drinks, caffeine, e-cigarettes and Flakka. Through the use of actual PET images, he will also explain how alcohol and drug use affect the developing adolescent and adult brain. His format is nonjudgmental and is based on objective scientific data.

This is school-community partnership that has support from the Bellmore-Merrick Community Coalition, Community Parent Center, Bellmore School District, North Bellmore School District, Merrick School District, North Merrick School District, state Sen. John Brooks, Assemblyman David McDonough, Presiding Officer Legis. Norma Gonsalves, Legislators Laura Curran and Steve Rhoads.

The presentation is open to parents, students, professionals and community members and will take place at 7:30 p.m. at the Brookside School, located at 1260 Meadowbrook Road in Merrick, Room 13.
