Two students from Merrick Avenue and Grand Avenue middle schools recently competed in the 2017 Hofstra Long Island Regional Scripps Spelling Bee with one making it to the final round on Feb. 12.

Breana Raehse, a Grand Avenue Middle School eighth-grader, advanced to the next round after going against students from throughout Long Island. Raehse, who won her school’s bee by correctly spelling “pertinacity,” joined Keith Zazzi at the regional bee. Zazzi, a seventh-grader at Merrick Avenue, secured his spot by correctly spelling “prestidigitation” at his school’s competition.

The students first competed in their individual classroom spelling bees hosted by their teachers, and were then offered a spot to compete in their schoolwide spelling bee.

The winner at Hofstra will attend the 92nd annual National Spelling Bee in Washington, D.C. in May.
