The Merrick Avenue Middle School Department of World Languages celebrated Foreign Language Week with several activities and events.
Each teacher’s students represented a different country for the week’s festivities. Some of the countries represented were China, Italy, Canada, Cuba, Argentina and Spain.  Students decorated classroom doors to showcase each country and dressed in the country’s colors on Friday.
In addition, using the theme “Unity,” students created word chains that demonstrated vocabulary they learned this year.

Throughout the week, students and faculty voted on the best poster in the department’s annual poster contest, the theme of which was “Stay Connected, Learn a Language.”

The following students were named winners; first place: Gary Solorzano of Anna DiChiara’s eighth grade class, second place: Skylar Sena of Anna DiChiara’s eighth grade class and third place: Antonette Malia of Susanne Kelly’s eighth grade class.

On March 10, the department hosted a spectacular World Culture Day coordinated by teachers Robyn Cohen, Anna Dichiara and Erin Yaltzindeg.
“Students and staff tasted dishes from all over the world and experienced music from China, France, Italy and Spanish speaking countries,” explained Rosa Kaplan, World Languages chairperson. “Students from the M.O.R.E. program created passports for the special event and savored the international delicacies. The occasion, highlighting cultures from all over the world was enjoyed by all.”
