Jake Arlia, a student at Grand Avenue Middle School, recently won first place in this year’s National Italian Exam. He started his study of Italian last year and is currently an eighth-grader in Melissa Steinhaus’ class.

“Jake is an ideal student who is always one to want to know more,” said Steinhaus. “He participates by asking many higher order thinking questions and shows passion for not just the language, but the Italian culture as well.”

Arlia earned a perfect score making him the only first-place winner out of 1, 591 test takers from 16 states, Puerto Rico and other countries.

“I had to study culture and memorize certain things about Italian history, literature, music and more,” explained Arlia. “While it was challenging to grasp certain aspects, I most enjoyed learning about their modern culture as I’ve traveled there twice.”

In recognition of his impressive work, he will receive a $500 prize and a scholarship that will cover tuition and accommodations for a two-week language course in Italy.

In addition, the American Association of Teachers of Italian will contribute a $500 award toward flight expenses.
