Students at Grand Avenue and Merrick Avenue middle schools in the Bellmore-Merrick Central School Districts participated in their buildings’ Scripps Spelling Bee competitions on Jan. 9.

At Grand Avenue, Samantha Nadler of Dawn Silvestri’s eighth-grade class captured second place, while Nick DiResta of Kevin Nolan’s eighth-grade class won first place.

DiResta became the champion by spelling the word, “libertarian” correctly.

At Merrick Avenue, seventh-grader Jay Sarju from Michael Dlugozima’s class won second place, while Noah Gonzales from Audrey Drakos’ seventh-grade class captured first place.

Gonzalez was named the winner after he spelled the word, “duarchy” correctly.

DiResta and Gonzales will move on by taking an online assessment which could qualify them for the regional competition.
