Mepham High School wrestlers Kyle Althenn and Matt Hegi were named Nassau County wrestling champions after competing Feb. 9-10.

Senior Kyle Althenn improved to 24-0 on the season as he captured the 138-pound title in dominating fashion with a 7-0 victory in the county finals.
“Kyle is Mepham’s first four-time All-County wrestler since 1987,” explained coach Sean Arresto.

Junior Matt Hegi improved to 32-2 on the season, as he took the 195-pound title with a 10-7 victory in the finals.

“Matt is now a two-time All-County wrestler, with one year left to defend his crown,” added Arresto. “Kyle and Matt will compete for All-State honors in two weeks at the Times Union Center in Albany.”

Overall the team finished in fifth place, their highest placement in five years.
