Mepham Wrestles to Top at Sprig Gardner Tournament

Members of the Mepham High School wrestling team were named this year’s Sprig Gardner Tournament Champions after the Dec. 9 meet.

Sixteen Pirate wrestlers placed in the top six to lead Mepham to a major upset over heavily favored Bellmore-Merrick CHSD’s Kennedy and King's Park high schools. 

“Kyle Althenn and Albert Cepeda both won their weight classes, with Althenn taking home the Rich Anderson Most Outstanding Mepham Wrestler Award,” said wrestling coach Sean Arresto. “Sophomores Griffin Karp and Matt Hegi also made the finals, both finishing in second place.”

Also, playing for the Pirates were Tyler Ward and Tyler Levitan at 99 pounds, Dillon Pekoff and Luke Benzing at 113 pounds, James Fazio at 120 pounds, Jack Molloy at 126 pounds, Adelson Molina and Josh Game at 138 pounds, John Koenig at 17 pounds, Ryan Hegi at 182 pounds, Mike Laupheimer at 195 pounds and Colin Liese at 285 pounds.
