Students enrolled in the Investigations in Science classes at Merrick Avenue and Grand Avenue middle put their scientist skills to the test when they recently visited the DNA learning center in Cold Spring Harbor.

They were able to genetically engineer bacteria with the Green Fluorescent Protein gene, harvested from jellyfish. These genes allowed the genetically engineered bacteria to glow in a process known as bioluminescence.

“This is a great opportunity for our middle school students to get real hands-on experience in a genetics lab, and gives them a great understanding of real life science research,” explained Michael Hughes, a district science chairperson.
