Mepham High School senior Matthew Hegi was recently named a News 12 Scholar Athlete.

Hegi has also earned county champion status in wrestling, All-Conference honors as in baseball, and has been a multiyear captain for both of those teams, as well as football.

“A three-sport athlete today is rare, especially for one who has accomplished this while maintaining high Honor Roll status in the school’s most rigorous academic program,” stated trustee Nina Lanci, as she read aloud his award at the Dec. 4 board of education meeting.

In addition to his involvement in athletics, Hegi is a member of the National, Italian and Math honor societies, Athletes Helping Athletes, Math League and the Robotics Club. He also volunteers as a tutor for local youth.

“Matt is the perfect role model for our younger student-athletes,” added Lanci.
Eligibility requires unweighted grades from 90 upwards, a SAT score of 1200 or higher, plus outstanding participation in two or more sports or a multi-season sport, and examples of leadership and service to others.
