“The Sky’s the Limit”-An Investigation of Cloud Cover on Major League Baseball Performance

The effect of climatic conditions on outdoor sporting events is full of possibilities, and research indicates that weather is a considerable variable in individual and team performance. The focus of this study was to investigate whether cloudy-sky game conditions favored the offense or defense.

This study required the integration of two existing data sets. The first data set were performance statistics obtained for the 2007 through 2010 Major League Baseball seasons. The data was retrieved from www.baseball-reference.com. The second data set analyzed cloud cover conditions and was obtained from http://sheridan.geog.kent.edu/ssc/data. The weather information obtained for this website was originally collected by the National Climatic Data Center (NCDC). Cloud cover data was gathered from each city hosting a Major League Baseball team during the years of the completed study. Several variables including; strikeouts, earned run averages, home runs allowed, batting averages, on base slugging percentages, walks and the number of errors were examined across the percent cloud cover conditions.

A series of Generalized Estimation Equations (GEE) regression analyses, employing the SPSS, Version 16 (SPSS, Inc, 2008) procedure, GENLIN, were employed to test the hypotheses. Statistically significant finding indicated that increased cloud cover tends to favor the batter. As the cloud cover increased by 1%, the number of strikeouts drops by .008. Additionally, as cloud cover increased, the trend moves towards a decrease in mean strikeouts, indicating that low percent cloud cover appears to favors the pitcher. Although trends were revealed examining variables, none were statistically significant.
