St. John's University College Advantage Program
As per St. John’s University, “the St. John’s College Advantage Program provides qualified juniors and seniors the opportunity to enroll in college credit bearing courses from the university while concurrently enrolled in high school.” The following electives offered at Mepham High School may be taken for St. John’s credit: Genetics, Human Anatomy and Physiology, Public Speaking, and Media.
Program Requirements: (Note: Sophomores are not eligible to receive college credit for these courses.)
Seniors:
- 80% average in the five academic subjects (English, mathematics, social studies, languages and science)
- a combined math and critical reading SAT score of 1000 (or 100 on the PSAT), or an ACT score of 21
- seniors may enroll in up to three courses or nine credits a semester
Juniors:
- 85% average in the five academic subjects (English, mathematics, social studies, languages and science) after two (2) years of high school
- a combined math and critical reading SAT score of 1000 (or 100 on the PSAT)
- if a junior has not taken the PSATs, he or she must register and sit for the October administration of the exam
- juniors may enroll in up to three courses or nine credits a semester
All students who register for the CAP are required to complete a final exam or special project. Course instructors will provide further details.
Points of Interest:
- Permits and checks for $250.00/course made payable to Bellmore-Merrick CHSD are due to CAP teachers by Friday, September 23rd
- The registration deadline is not flexible
- There is no retroactive registration
- As per St. John’s: there is no financial refund
- Credit is transferable to many other institutions with a “C” or better in the course
(check with St. John’s for this information) - College Advantage students who enroll in St. John’s University will receive a $2,000 tuition grant for each of the four years of their undergraduate study
(students must maintain a 2.0 GPA)
