Quick Tips

Focus Your Efforts

Decide on an aspect of your subject that truly interests you. Try to state your topic as a question. Then, identify and list the key words, significant terms and the main concepts. Make a list of synonyms and related words. You will use these terms to search for information about your topic.

You may find that there is too little information available on your topic, and you will have to broaden it. You can broaden your topic by:

  • searching related synonyms and key words
  • searching related concepts
  • selecting more general terms

If you find too much information on your topic, you will have to narrow it. You can narrow your topic by:

  • choosing a specific aspect or subtopic of your topic
  • focusing on a specific time period, location, individual or group
