Athena Silver, a ninth grader at Calhoun High School in the Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District, created a comforting outlet during the COIVD-19 pandemic— baking.

With all the time at home, she learned how to perfect areas of baking and learned new techniques to help strengthen her baking abilities and Baked by Athena was born.

“She has been surprising friends and family with all of her baked goods for a while now,” explained Principal Nicole Hollings. “With that, she thought about Bellmore-Merrick's graduating seniors and middle schoolers.”

Right from her home kitchen in Bellmore, the 15-year-old started thinking of ways to make her business special.

“I wanted to bring the joy to others in the community,” added Silver. “As a student at Calhoun, the first thing that came to my mind were the seniors in the district. I felt bad that they didn't get the end they were expecting, and thought sweet treats would help with a bit of happiness like they did with everyone else.”

Silver’s specialty is the “Class of 2020 cupcakes” which are presented in a gift box with school colors and mascots for each of the middle and high schools.
“I love seeing each family holding their boxes of cupcakes with a smile on their faces,” Silver said.
