The lawn of Mepham High School is adorned with nearly 200 American and military branch flags after students and staff volunteered to install a Flag Field of Honor on Nov. 3.

In a fundraising effort led by social studies teachers Kerry Dennis and Chris Patten, students participating in the senior service learning project sold flags to benefit the district’s food pantry, the Bellmore-Merrick Community Cupboard.

“In addition, the students have also been running a schoolwide fall challenge to benefit the Cupboard,” explained Dennis. “The grades are competing against one another to bring in items needed. We are currently in the third week and have made two large donations to the Cupboard so far.”

Participants followed COVID protocols during the outdoor event.

“While we were putting up the flags, our students and staff wore masks the entire time and gloves while working and we spread out stations for working,” added Dennis.
