On Dec. 10, Merrick Avenue Middle School students got to welcome Emmy Award-winning writer, Kevin Shinick — virtually.

The event was organized by the school’s PTA and included a Zoom webinar.

“Kevin spoke about his inspiration, as well as his experiences at middle school and at Sanford H. Calhoun High School,” explained Principal Katelyn Dunn. “Kevin spoke to students about following their passion and doing the things that they love to do. He spoke about making a career out of doing something he loved and was passionate about. Kevin also recalled teachers he had in Bellmore-Merrick who were inspirational for him, such as current Calhoun teacher, Sal Salerno.”

Shinick authored the bestselling young adult novel, “Star Wars: Force Collector.” In addition to writing, Shinick is also an actor, and has been on trading cards — and even made into an action figure. He is also the voice of Bruce Banner, “The Incredible Hulk’s” brainy alter ego on Marvel’s “Avengers,” “Spider-Man” and “Guardians of the Galaxy.” Shinick has worked alongside George Lucas, Stan Lee, and collaborated with the rock band KISS for the “Scooby-Doo and KISS Rock and Roll Mystery.”

Last week, students sent in questions for Shinick to answer and they also had the opportunity to ask questions live.

“Our PTA was able to get ahold of some of his comic books and ‘Force Collector’ books to raffle off to students throughout the week,” added Dunn.
