David Bekore, a senior at Calhoun High School has been named a national winner in the 2016 National Council of Teacher of English (NCTE) Awards in Writing.

“David is a true leader amongst his peers as a member of the varsity football team, president of the National Honor Society, a student leader within Athletes Helping Athletes, a math team member, a writer for the school newspaper, and a shot-put thrower,” stated Trustee Wendy Gargiulo during the award presentation at the Nov. 2 board of education meeting.

“Outside of school, David’s leadership extends to his youth group where he serves as the co-president of NCSY, recruiting new members, running meetings, organizing and participating in service-based initiatives,” added Kim Serpe, English chairperson.

Judges from NCTE evaluated writing from 533 juniors around the country.  Entries were judged on content, purpose, audience, tone, word choice, organization, development, and style.  To become a part of the national competition, David first was selected by the English department as a school nominee from over 30 submissions.  David submitted two pieces of writing to be judged by English teachers nationwide.
