Cougars Wrestle to Pin League III Title

Kennedy High School wrestling team defeated Garden City on Jan. 25, with a 46-22 win to capture the Nassau League III title.

Jack Krug became the 15th wrestler in Kennedy history to achieve 100 career wins.

The squad boasts five wrestlers ranked in the top six in the Nassau County including Boaz Smart who is currently undefeated and ranked no. 1 in Nassau and seventh in New York State.

Other ranked wrestlers include Greg Brach (99 pounds), Krug (182 pounds), Brandon Mercado (106 pounds) and Dan Shafran (195 pounds). 

Greg Brach and Boaz Smart won the Shoreline Tournament on Jan. 20 at New Rochelle High School. 

“This is one of the toughest in season tournaments in the state,” said coach Brian DeGaetano.

Brandon Mercado also made the finals and lost a close 6-4 match to the third ranked wrestler in New York State. 

“Smart became the first wrestler in school history to place,” DeGaetano added.

The team is currently ranked seventh in Nassau and holds a current record of 11-3 in dual-meets. They now move on to individuals and then New York State competitions.
