Students and staff from around the Central High School District, along with the Lions Club District 20K2 of Nassau County & Bermuda hosted more than 600 children at the annual holiday party they hosted on Dec. 7 at the Brookside School.
Embracing the Lion’s motto of “We Serve,” club members and their families from clubs throughout Long Island, including Bellmore, Massapequa and Rockville Centre, have been preparing for the event for months, under the direction and guidance of Lion Past District Governor and board trustee, Nina Lanci, who has chaired the event for the past five years.
“There are families in our area struggling just to put food on their table every day, and by creating this event, we ensure that every child who attends will have a holiday celebration to remember,” stated Lanci, committee chair of the event. “This day also gives their parents, who often work two and three jobs just to support their family, a day relax, laugh and watch their children embrace the joy and excitement of the season. You can’t put a dollar amount on that. We want to show them that the community cares about them and their children. All of us work hard to make the day memorable for the whole family.”
Train themed tickets, costumed characters and the group members greeted the young attendees as they come into the venue. Students and Lions Club members also volunteered running stations such as including arts and crafts, games, food, books and toys, as well as a place to receive warm hats, gloves and scarves. Students provided vocal and instrumental entertainment as well.
