Introduction | The Task | The Process & Resources | Conclusion

Introduction

You and your partners have been working together for years as writers for the New York Times. One of you has been very successful as a restaurant critic who has traveled the world and written articles about hundreds of restaurants. Another of you is an avid traveler who has been to the most fascinating tourist attractions in the world. Finally, the third person has written critiques of hotels and other types of lodging from all parts of the globe.

Your bosses have had a brainstorm and have decided to have the three of you work cooperatively on a new multimedia travel guide that the
Times will be publishing on the Internet about European countries. After all, you are the experts, right? Luckily the project will begin in Madrid, Spain (of course!).

You and your partners will be traveling to Madrid immediately to begin your research in your fields of expertise. ¡Vámonos!

The Quest

You will be visiting various hotels, restaurants, and tourist attractions in Madrid. Gather enough information so that you can write a travel brochure using HyperStudio for your readers. After reading your brochure will they be ready to go to Madrid?

The Process and Resources

In this WebQuest you will be working in groups of three. Each group will complete the task of researching lodging, restaurants, and attractions in Madrid and creating a travel brochure using HyperStudio with the collected information. As a member of the group you will explore Web pages in Spanish. Because these are real Web pages we're tapping into, not things made just for schools, the reading level might challenge you. Feel free to use a dictionary.

Assign a role to each member of your group and begin your Quest.

Phase 1 - Background: Something for Everyone

Use the Internet information linked below to research the topic for which you are to be an expert. Record and/or print any information that you feel will be helpful in creating a beautiful and creative travel brochure. Remember that all of your work is to be done in Spanish.

Phase 2 - Looking Deeper from Different Perspectives

INSTRUCTIONS:

1. Each member of your WebQuest team will explore one of the roles below.

2. Read through the files linked to your role. If you print out the files, underline the passages that you feel are the most important. If you look at the files on the computer, copy sections you feel are important by dragging the mouse across the passage and copying / pasting it into a word processor or other writing software.

3.
Note: Remember to write down or copy/paste the URL of the file you take the passage from so you can quickly go back to it if you need to do more research.

4. Be prepared to focus your search on information that will be helpful in creating your brochure and to the people who read it.

Phase 3 - Debating, Discussing, and Reaching Consensus

You have all learned about a different part of Madrid. Now all of the group members should come back to the larger WebQuest team with expertise gained by searching from one perspective. You must all now work together as a group to organize your travel brochure for Madrid, Spain. Use information, pictures, illustrations, movies, music, facts, opinions, etc. from the Web pages you explored to create your multimedia HyperStudio travel brochure. Begin with an introductory title card. Each member of your group is responsible for creating three illustrated cards with text about his or her area of expertise.

Phase 4 - Real World Feedback

You and your teammates have learned a lot by dividing up into different roles. Now's the time to put your learning into a letter you'll send out for real world feedback. Together you will write a letter that contains opinions, information, and perspectives that you've gained. Here's the process:

1. Begin your letter with a statement of who you are and why you are writing your message to this particular person or organization.

2. Give background information that shows you understand the topic.

STATE THE TASK / QUEST(ION) AND YOUR GROUP'S ANSWER.

3. Each person in your group should write a paragraph that gives two good reasons supporting the group's opinion. Make sure to be specific in both the information (like where you got it from on the Web) and the reasoning (why the information proves your group's point).

4. Have each person on the team proofread the message. Use correct letter format and make sure you have correctly addressed the email message. Use the link below to make contact. Send your message and make sure your teacher gets a copy.

Conclusion

So you have returned from Spain, created a multimedia presentation, and have had your work published on the Internet by the New York Times. The people of Spain couldn't have asked for a better brochure to convince travelers to visit Madrid. Where will you go next?
