Introduction

Yourgroup has been chosen to form the first Math Magazine for teens! Weall know how exciting mathematics can be and we want to share thisexcitement with the whole world! Each of you will be creatingexciting articles, puzzles, challenge problems,cartoons andadvertisements. You will then edit your individual work as a groupand your math teen magazine will be born!


The Quest

You andyour partners will have your own specific job as part of the editingteam. You can choose to be an editor, a designer, or an organizer.Together, you will collaborate your work and your creative forces tocreate a magazine masterpiece.


The Process andResources

I. Eachone of you needs to write twoarticles.You may choose from the following topics:


1Biographical sketch of a Great Mathematician
2. Women in Mathematics
3. Careers involving Math
4. Math and Space
5. Self- Help Article


II. Each one of you needs to create your own MathChallenge Problem. The challenge problem mustbe a WORD PROBLEM which includes ALGEBRA. (You must supply asolution.)

III. Each one of you needs to create apuzzleusing math problems.(DO NOT create a puzzle with math words!) Use themath that we have learned so far this year. (Note: You also need toprovide a key for your puzzle.) You may choose to create a:


1. Mathcross-number puzzle
2. Decoder puzzle with a message
3. Math Maze
4. Tic Tac Toe


IV. Lastly, each one of you needs to choose one of thefollowing:


1. Create a cartoon about math.
2. Create an advertisement about anything involved withmath.

 

Phase 1 -Background: Something for Everyone

Lookthrough different magazines and get ideas for your own magazine.Invent catchy titles for your articles. Be artistic. Displaypictures. Make your magazine appealing!

 

Phase 2 - LookingDeeper from Different Perspectives

INSTRUCTIONS FOR YOURARTICLES:

I. Articles must be at least four paragraphs long and TYPED.

II. If you choose...


1.BiographySketch of a Great Mathematician, please include informationlike: date of birth, where he/she lived, important works orcontributions in mathematics and how there contributions are usedtoday.

2. Women inMathematics, you can either do abiographical sketch of a particular mathematician, or you can nameseveral women mathematicians and their contributions.

3. CareersInvolving Math, you must name at leastthree careers which involve math. You can write an informativearticle or you can interview people who have careers which involvemath.

4. Math andSpace, youcan explore any topic having to do with space and explain how math isinvolved.

5.
Self-Help, you can discuss any topicsthat can be useful to math students, such as: 'How to Study for aMath Test', or 'How to Find Math Help on the Internet'.

Phase 3 -Debating, Discussing, and Reaching Consensus

Wheneach of you have completed your portion of the magazine, you willwork together to create your finished project. Choose one of thesethree jobs:


1.
EDITOR -Main Job: Proofreader; responsible for allspelling, and making sure that all articles stay on topic and areclear and concise.


2.
DESIGNER- Main Job: Creative force; responsible for designingthe cover, Table of Contents, the layout and any artwork presented inthe magazine.


3.
ORGANIZER- Main Job: to organize; responsible for keeping thegroup motivated and making sure that all work is done by the deadlineset by the teacher. Also responsible for correcting all math writtenfor the magazine.

P.S.- Make sure that you have indicated somewhere in your magazinethe person who was the editor, designer, and organizer. HAVEFUN!


Conclusion

So howexcited can YOU get about Math?! Take an interest in the topics thatyou pick. Hand in a quality piece of work. Feel proud to be pioneersof the first Math magazine for teens!
