Picture this: You have been asked to assist various types of people achieve lifetime fitness. Some of these people already maintain a certain level of fitness, while others do not. Your job is to help one of these people, regardless of their current fitness level, become more 'fit' in one of the areas of lifetime fitness. You and your group will develop a Handbook which will contain the results of your work.
You are going to find the information for your person on the Internet. Finding accurate information on the Internet can be tricky. It is important to read the information on a site before using it. You will not have accurate information if you just browse through a link. I have provided links to help you find the information you need. You can use these links or you can surf the web for others. Be sure the information you find on your own is consistent with some of the links I have given you.
In the following WebQuest, you will use the power of teamwork and the abundant resources on the Internet to learn all about Lifetime Fitness Concepts. Each person on your team will learn one piece of the puzzle and then you will come together to get a better understanding of the topic.
How can people of various fitness needs benefit from the five lifetime fitness concepts?
You will begin with your group being assigned one of the five lifetime fitness concepts. Next, everyone in your group will be assigned a role. The roles are NFL football player, marathon runner, a sedentary retired person, a typical middle school student, and a wheelchair bound adult. There will be five students in each group, therefore each person assumes one of the five roles. Your task is to gather information about your groups lifetime fitness concept and how it relates to 'your' role.
For example, if you are assuming the role of marathon runner and your groups lifetime fitness concept is cardiovascular fitness, you will gather information on how a marathon runner benefits from developing his/her cardiovascular health. How do they do it? Why should they improve their cardiovascular health?
Maintaining a healthy fitness level is one way to ensure a healthy and happy life. Lifetime Fitness is the term used to describe the components necessary to achieve a healthy fitness level. The development of these concepts ensures the development of ones personal fitness.

You have all learned about Lifetime Fitness Concepts by assuming various roles. You will now become part of a 'new' WebQuest team. Your new WebQuest team will consist of the other students in the class who have assumed the same role as you. Each team will then use the expertise gained by searching from one perspective in order to explain how each lifetime fitness concept can affect the lives of various people.
You must all now answer the Task / Quest(ion) as a group. Each of you will bring a certain viewpoint to the answer: some of you will agree and others disagree. Use information, pictures, movies, facts, opinions, etc. from the Web pages you explored to convince your teammates that your viewpoint is important and should be part of your team's answer to the Task / Quest(ion). Your new WebQuest team will take all of its information to build a handbook of your own. This handbook will contain the answers to the questions you explored.
You and your teammates have learned a lot by dividing up into different roles. Now's the time to put your learning into a letter you'll send out for real world feedback. Together you will write a letter that contains opinions, information, and perspectives that you've gained. Here's the process:
1. Begin your Handbook with a statement of who you are (your assumed role) and why you are writing this Handbook.
2. Give background information that shows you understand the topic.
STATE THE TASK / QUEST(ION) AND YOUR GROUP'S ANSWER.
3. Each person in your group should write a paragraph that gives two good reasons supporting the group's opinion. Make sure to be specific in both the information (like where you got it from on the Web) and the reasoning (why the information proves your group's point).
4. Have each person on the team proofread the message. Be sure that your handbook addresses each of the five fitness concepts and how they relate to the role your team has assumed.
You are now an expert on the five Lifetime Fitness Concepts. You should be able to explain the benefits of lifetime fitness to someone if asked. You also possess the knowledge to live a healthy and 'fit' life yourself. Nice work. You should be proud of yourselves! How can you use what you've learned to see beyond the black and white of a topic and into the grayer areas? What other parts of Lifetime Fitness Concepts could still be explored? Remember, learning never stops.
