Introduction

Your family is planning to do something very special this summer. Your parents have decided to become a host family for a disadvantaged child from New York City! The simple pleasures and playing in your backyard will create magical moments and lasting memories for everyone.

This new friend will get to experience the freedom of catching fireflies in your backyard, bogie boarding at Jones Beach, and riding a bicycle for the first time. They come from the toughest neighborhoods in New York. An unforgettable summer is being planned with your help and your family.

Let's experience a new restaurant to take our guest.


The Quest

What would be a fun, unique place to dine at that our guest has never experienced?


The Process and Resources

Which eatery has something for everyone? Dad wants a place that's not going to leave him broke. Mom suggests a restaurant that includes a children's menu. Let's make it fun, but also relaxing.

After you finish this webquest your mouth will be anxious to taste old and new tasty delights. Your new discoveries are tempting and waiting for you. Save your appetites and explore the menus!

Phase 1 - Background: Something for Everyone

-Learn about the Fresh Air Fund.
-Design a birthday party menu of the native foods your guest would prepare on their special day.
-Choose a restaurant and discover what makes it special and interesting to a newcomer.
-Design a poster menu.
-Write a dinner review for Bellmore Life and Merrick Life.
'A Night on the Town'

Phase 2 - Looking Deeper from Different Perspectives

INSTRUCTIONS:

1. Research information on Moslem foods. Create a birthday menu for your Fresh Air guest.


2. Review the restaurant menus. Click on them and bookmark them. You will later print the retaurant menus. Include children's menus.


3. Complete vocabulary words ditto. Learn appropriate words found on a menu.
4. Design a menu. You must include the appetizer, entree, dessert, and drinks.
5. Open a file under Claris Works and get ready to write the review for Bellmore Life or Merrick Life. Title it 'My Night On the Town.'


6. After you write your review, print the newspaper column. Attach this to your poster.

Fresh Air guest-Moslem birthday party

The person you are hosting from the Fresh Air Fund is Moslem. Find out the foods a Arab Moslem would eat. Are there any foods they cannot eat.

Menu Posters

Create a poster showing the type of menu you would present to your guest.

 

Phase 3 - Debating, Discussing, and Reaching Consensus

We will spend time presenting the menu poster in class. We will also present the Restaurant in Review for the Week.

Phase 4 - Real World Feedback

Visit New York City. Try to interest your family to visit a restaurant that has never been explored before by you or your family. Drop in and experience new foods and ambiance!


Conclusion

Next time you visit a new restaurant have an open mind. Discover new foods. You may surprise yourself and everyone in your family.
