On March 23-24, students in math classes Kennedy and Merrick Avenue spoke with Michael Jerman of the Mets, Zac Fieroh of the Yankees, and Derek Topper from the sports agency CAA to hear about their use of data, statistics, and analytics in their professional jobs.

Students learned about the math behind evaluating player trades, deciding on a free agent's contract length and size, and making in-game decisions using statistical methods.

“All three professionals reported that computer programming was an integral part of their jobs and encouraged students to continue learning both statistics and coding,” explained David Prince, a math chair. “Students were given tips on college majors and skills to learn outside of the classroom if they want to pursue a career in the field of sports analytics.”

Will Bellmore-Merrick baseball teams partner up with AP Statistics classes to start using analytics? Only time will tell!
