Leadership students across the high schools in the Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District visited social studies classes on Jan. 13 to kick off the district’s annual MLK Week of Service.
They presented lessons and led an activity about Martin Luther King, Jr.’s legacy, led a hands-on activity, created kindness and I Have a Dream walls, chalked the school walkways with positive messages and more.
At Merrick Avenue and Grand Avenue Middle Schools, social studies lesson explored Dr. King's vision for a better world and expressed their personal dreams for the future by creating "dream hands’, as well as a series of engaging activities, including sharing messages of encouragement by writing uplifting words on the sidewalks in front of the school, spreading positivity to everyone who passes by, focused on committing of kindness and heartfelt compliments in the halls, creating a culture of care and support among peers.
Students and staff across Bellmore-Merrick were also encouraged to continue to donate breakfast items to the Community Cupboard.
Throughout the week, students also have been participating in additional activities that aim to promote a caring and compassionate community.
