Coming off their recent win at the Long Island Science Congress, a two-student team from Grand Avenue Middle School was presented the Highest Honor Award at the STANYS New York State Science Congress competition, held this past Sunday, June 11th, at the Museum of Science and Technology in Syracuse. Tazbid Ajhor and Louis Romano won with their research project, “How does Martian Regolith Simulant affect the plant growth of Pisum sativum in contrast to potting soil?” Their project design stemmed from their interest in learning whether crops can be successfully grown on Mars and under what conditions.

The STANYS New York State Science Congress is a culminating event for students who have been given high honor recognition by a NYS regional science fair. It is an opportunity for students to display and share a student created science project. Under the guidance of science teacher Tami Cruz, these research students participated and excelled in three competitions during the school year.
