On behalf of the entire professional staff, welcome to the Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District Interscholastic Athletic Program. We are a member of the Nassau County Public High School Athletic Association (Section 8 of the NYSPHSAA), and as a district, offer a diversified athletic program consisting of 25 varsity sports in each high school building, and 29 middle school sports in each building. Also, six district teams are available for participation. The Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District, coaches and student-athletes exemplify gracious competitors who embrace challenge, enjoy the process, win with humility, handle defeat with dignity, advocate for their sport, and are positive role models. Our community has high standards in regard to sportsmanship and conduct. We expect our students and coaches to uphold these standards at all times. The Athletic Department is grateful to the Bellmore-Merrick Board of Education, Central Administration, our parents and members of various Booster Clubs who provide unrelenting support, energy and enthusiasm for our student-athletes and coaches. The product of our investment in athletics is the development of adolescents and adults who continue to contribute to the Bellmore-Merrick community in a positive manner.
Physical Education is an integral part of the total education which contributes to the development of the individual through the natural medium of physical activity. The Physical Education program has as its foundation a common core of sequential learning experiences and is geared to the developmental needs of each student. As a focal point, all activities are designed to enrich the physical fitness of the students by providing knowledge and experiences that enhance each student's “wellness.” The High School program focuses on developing skills in a wide range of lifetime recreational pursuits. The Middle School program consists of co-ed physical education classes that consist of classroom activities that are designed to provide physical activities for the individual, as well as, skills that are essential in becoming a valuable member of a team. These skills stimulate an interest in recreational activities that can be continued into adult life.
The Health education curriculum exposes our students to key concepts on how to properly maintain and promote a healthy lifestyle in a continually changing environment. Throughout the curriculum, there is a theme of developing positive behaviors to enhance a more productive member of society. In addition, emphasis is given to eliminating behaviors that negatively affect a healthy lifestyle and place an individual at risk. The instructional units are organized into major topical groupings that allow the teacher to build a broad foundation while explaining and challenging the student with new information and problems to solve.
