Exploration Through Creative Arts Camp

The creativity was flowing in the Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District this summer, as hundreds of students have been enjoying the wide variety of courses offered in the annual Creative Arts Camp.
The six-week program included more than 20 classes in family and consumer sciences, fine arts, music, and theater and dance, and were held across the district. It was open to children and teens living within the district’s boundaries, with course options for upper elementary, middle school and high school students.
In Bake Shop, which ran from July 28-Aug. 1 at Grand Avenue Middle School, two dozen students entering grades 7-9 spent a week making bread, cookies, cupcakes, muffins, pancakes, smoothies and more. They explored food science and learned different techniques from FACS teacher Regina Schilling.
Incoming eighth grader Averie Malerba took the baking class as well as a sewing class a different week.
“It teaches you good skills for the future,” Averie said. “There’s also a lot of people you can meet and friends that you can make.”
In a jewelry making class at Calhoun High School, students started out by making corded friendship bracelets before moving on to beaded projects. Other art classes focused on cartooning, fashion design, printmaking and watercolor painting.
The Character Study theater class emphasized performance, movement and expression, and participants wrote their own monologues. Music featured band, orchestra and ukulele workshops.
