MAMS Student Wins American History Essay Contest

StudentsinJoe Amador's social studies classes at Merrick Avenue Middle School submitted essays to the American History Essay Contest sponsored by the Amityville Colonel Gilbert Potter Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution.

The theme of this year's contest was"Stars and Stripes Forever." Students were tasked with imagining it was the year 1897 and they were a newspaper reporter for the Philadelphia Times. They were charged with writingan article about the new song performed that day, including details about Sousa’s life and the story behind the song.

Mara Rosenstock won first place, and her essay has been enteredinto a statewide competition. Rosenstock washonored with a certificate and also received a cash prize.

Jenna Hughes andAvianna Rao’s essays also received commendation.
