Bellmore-Merrick Celebrate Unity Day Through Kindness, Inclusion and Community Connection

The Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District celebrated Unity Day on Oct. 21, bringing students and staff together across its school buildings to promote kindness, inclusion, belonging and connection. Guided by this year’s district-wide theme, “Crafting Our Story,” the celebration emphasized that every person, every connection and every act of kindness contributes to the fabric of the school community.
Selected by Superintendent Michael Harrington, the book “Exactly as Planned” helped reinforce the district’s theme and its message that each individual plays an important role in shaping a shared community story. Students and staff were encouraged to wear orange in recognition of Unity Day, participating in a collective show of support for a culture where everyone feels valued and included.
Across the district, schools marked the occasion with interactive displays, creative activities and student-led initiatives designed to strengthen relationships and spread positive messages.
At Merrick Avenue Middle School, students in the Rams Connect program traced their hands onto orange paper, cut out the handprints and wrote messages of kindness. The Student Council then displayed the handprints throughout the school, creating a Unity Wall filled with encouraging words and reminders of the power of small acts of compassion.
Grand Avenue Middle School also utilized their Advisory periods through the week to create a Unity Day wall display that celebrates the importance of connection, inclusion and belonging.
At Sanford H. Calhoun High School, students in the special education program and seniors in teacher Alyssa Sieber’s DSP class participated in a variety of activities, including a Unity Rock Garden craft, lanyard making and a photo booth where students represented the “I” in KIND. Students shared messages of kindness with teachers and took part in a Common Thread activity, reinforcing the idea that individual actions and relationships weave together to create a stronger community.
At John F. Kennedy High School, the Key Club created a Unity Wall, where members wrote kind and uplifting messages on paper hearts to spread positivity, promote inclusion, and remind everyone of the importance of kindness and standing together.
“Students and staff were encouraged to wear orange in solidarity and to take a walk through the decorated hallway to read the inspiring messages written by their peers, each one a reminder of the power of kindness and community at Kennedy High School,” noted special education teacher and faculty advisor Brianna McKeough.
At Wellington C. Mepham High School, the choir created a Unity Wall of Words that offered messages of kindness and positivity. Students also participated in team bonding activities during physical education classes.
Brookside School celebrated connection through its Brookside Buddies program, which paired students from the MAP and PREP Academy programs to lead interactive stations and activities. Students enjoyed face painting, temporary tattoos, crafts such as sensory bags and keychain making, a photo booth, video games, a caramel apple bar and pizza bagel making. The school’s Day of Bonding integration complemented the district-wide Unity Day celebrations by creating opportunities for students to build friendships and enjoy meaningful shared experiences.
Unity Day also builds on the district’s ongoing commitment to fostering respect, civility and leadership beyond the classroom. On Sept. 23, the district hosted its fourth annual Section VIII Unity Summit at Brookside School, bringing together student-athletes and coaches from across Nassau County to focus on sportsmanship, civility and leadership.
Through these school-wide celebrations and ongoing initiatives, the Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District continues to reinforce the importance of creating welcoming environments where every student and staff member has a place, a voice and a meaningful role in crafting the community’s story.
