The Calhoun On Tour Company presents PigPen Theatre Co.’s The Old Man and The Old Moon.  

The Calhoun High School On Tour Company is continuing its 2025-2026 season with The Old Man and The Old Moon, a play with music, directed and musically directed by Mr. James Crichton.  

The Old Man and the Old Moon is a whimsical, folk-infused adventure that follows a faithful caretaker whose sole duty is to refill the leaking moon with liquid light each night. When his wife suddenly follows a mysterious melody and disappears, the Old Man abandons his post for the first time in memory to find her, causing the world to fall into darkness as the moon withers away. His epic seafaring quest leads him through the belly of a giant fish, into the path of apocalyptic storms, and through a series of encounters with colorful sailors and ghosts. Ultimately, the play is a lyrical exploration of love, duty, and the power of memory, concluding with the Old Man rediscovering his past and passing his lunar responsibilities to a new generation so he can begin a new chapter with his wife.  

Performances will take place in the Sal Salerno Little Theater at Sanford H. Calhoun High School (1786 State St., Merrick, NY 11566) on Jan. 17 at 2 and 7 p.m. and on Jan. 24 at 2 and 7 p.m. The Saturday, January 24 matinee at 2:00 p.m. will be a sensory-friendly performance.  

The sensory-friendly performance began as a student-driven proposal by senior Nattie Martin, who was recently named Person of the Year by The Merrick Herald, and who went on to curate and lead this special performance. This welcoming performance is designed for audience members with sensory sensitivities and will include accommodations such as enhanced house lighting for safe movement, a Sensory Guide, and a Sensory-Friendly toolkit. With Nattie’s leadership and dedication, this performance aims to create an inclusive theater experience and inspire more productions that serve individuals with sensory needs.
