MAMS, Calhoun Flag Field of Honor Raises Money for Veterans’ Organizations

This year’s Flag Field of Honor at Merrick Avenue Middle School raised more than $10,000 in support of several charitable organizations.
On Nov. 1, students, teachers, administrators, veterans, local elected officials, and community members came together to install the field of American flags along the school’s front lawn. The annual event serves as both a fundraising effort and a tribute to those who have served our country.
Proceeds from this year’s campaign will benefit Honor Flight Long Island and the Tunnel to Towers Foundation, two organizations dedicated to honoring and supporting veterans and their families.
In the weeks leading up to the installation, sponsorship forms were distributed throughout the Merrick and Bellmore-Merrick communities, encouraging residents to sponsor flags in honor of loved ones and service members.
At Merrick Avenue Middle School, French/ENL teacher Denise Schleith spearheaded student efforts, while business teacher Sue Litwin at Calhoun High School coordinated a parallel fundraising initiative.
“Each flag before us represents courage, sacrifice, and service,” said Schleith during the ceremony. “Together, they form a powerful symbol of gratitude to the men and women who have served our country and protected the freedoms we enjoy each day.”
Two veterans addressed the crowd during the ceremony: Chris Levi, a returning guest speaker who has shared his story with students for the past three years, and Vincent DellPaoli, a Vietnam veteran who participated in a past Honor Flight.
“To our students—let this field inspire you,” Schleith continued. “Remember that service takes many forms. Whether it’s helping a classmate, volunteering in the community, or standing up for what’s right, you can make a difference every day.”
The Mack family of Merrick, whose daughter attends Calhoun High School, has led the Flag Field of Honor effort for the past five years, continually growing the tradition and its impact each year.
“We couldn’t have completed this flag field without the help of the custodians and student volunteers,’ added Dr. Jessica Mack. “Additionally, we’d like to recognize and thank the Demato, Pucella, and Fox families for their dedication and support.”
World Languages Chair Rosa Kaplan, Special Education Chairperson Melissa Rohr, Calhoun Principal Michael Hughes, Superintendent Michael Harrington, and Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum Scott Bersin were all in attendance for the moving installation and ceremony.
The Flag Field of Honor will remain on display in front of the Merrick Avenue Middle School building through the first week of December.
“That sign and names will be installed later this week as each flag represents a service member connected to our MAMS and Calhoun school communities,” noted MAMS Principal Katelyn Dunn. “I hope students and families who drive by feel the gratitude this month as we observe Veterans Day. We are so grateful to those who have served and thankful to the families who sponsored a flag this year.”
