VIDEO: Hands-On Learning Takes Center Stage at STEAM Expo

The Central High School District’s strong commitment to science, technology, engineering, art and mathematics was on full display on Jan. 15 during the district’s third annual STEAM Expo.
The interactive evening event, held at Merrick Avenue Middle School, highlighted the district’s comprehensive STEAM curriculum along with its wide range of co-curricular programs, competitive teams and student clubs. Families had the opportunity to explore hands-on demonstrations and activities that reflected the depth and innovation of STEAM instruction across the district.
Throughout the event, attendees engaged with experiences ranging from coding drones and NAO robots to operating Sphero bots and student-designed robots. Additional exhibits included 3D art creations, information on advanced science research opportunities, and interactive stations focused on eSports, gaming and hovercraft technology. The Expo welcomed families from Bellmore-Merrick’s elementary component districts, offering future students an early glimpse into the district’s STEAM pathways.
The event was coordinated by Dr. Danielle Caliendo, math and STEAM chairperson, and Roger Bing, science and STEAM chairperson, made possible through the collaboration of dozens of district chairpersons, teachers and students who worked together to create an engaging and informative experience.
“The success of the STEAM Expo reflects the incredible dedication of our faculty and the curiosity and creativity of our students,” said Caliendo. “Seeing students of all ages exploring, collaborating and discovering the many opportunities available through Bellmore-Merrick’s STEAM programs was truly rewarding and highlights the strength of our district’s commitment to innovation and learning.”
Bing added that the STEAM Expo was a reminder of the impact that curiosity can have in bringing a community together.
“The opportunity to connect current and future STEAM students while engaging them in inquiry and creation highlighted the holistic culture that exists within our programs,” he stated.
