Bulldogs Hockey Wins First NYS Championship

The Bellmore-Merrick Bulldogs Varsity Hockey Team has secured its first New York State High School Hockey Championship in program history, finishing atop Conference 1 of the New York Islanders High School Hockey League and clinching its spot among the state’s elite.
The Bulldogs traveled to Binghamton, NY to compete in the NYS HS Hockey Championships, a tournament featuring the top eight teams from across the state. In a thrilling final matchup, Bellmore-Merrick defeated St. Francis Prep of Buffalo by a score of 4–2, earning the program’s inaugural state title.
Head Coach Patrick Braglia praised the complete team effort, noting that depth, discipline, and balanced scoring were defining factors throughout the tournament. Braglia is joined by coaches Chris Patten (a teacher at Mepham High School) and Chris Wierzbicki and Gene Castro.
“Our group had contributions from so many different players,” said Braglia. “The depth of this team was critical to our success, and every player elevated their game on the biggest stage.”
Goaltender Henry LaGalia delivered a standout performance, making key saves at crucial moments to keep the Bulldogs competitive and poised for timely scoring opportunities. The championship game’s decisive moment came with under three minutes remaining, when Jackson Austin netted the game-winning goal on a masterful deflection off a point shot from Harrison Nawrocki.
Following the go-ahead goal, the Bulldogs defense showcased unwavering determination, blocking numerous shots and protecting the lead. AMax Vitale sealed the victory with an empty-net goal, securing the historic championship.
With the state title now in hand, the Bulldogs turn their attention to the national stage. The team is set to travel to Plymouth, MN, to compete in the USA Hockey National Championships from March 18–22. There, they will face the top high school teams from across the country with hopes of bringing home a National Championship banner.
“This group has earned the right to compete with the best in the nation,” Braglia added. “We’re excited for the opportunity and ready for the challenge.”
