Johnny Macko Wins Two NYS Swim Championships for the Sharks

The Bellmore-Merrick Sharks boys’ swim program delivered an outstanding performance at the NYSPHSAA Boys Varsity Swimming and Diving Championships in Ithaca, highlighted by a historic showing from captain Johnny Macko.
Macko, a junior at Mepham High School, captured New York State titles in both the 200-yard freestyle and the 500-yard freestyle, cementing his place among the top swimmers in the state. He posted personal-best performances in both championship races, first touching the wall in the 200 freestyle in 1:39.47 and later winning the 500 freestyle in 4:28.31.
Both times met the standard for All-American consideration, a national benchmark recognizing the top high school swimmers in the country.
The Sharks also saw an exceptional performance from junior captain Ethan Cintron, also of Mepham, who competed in the 200 freestyle and 100 backstroke. Cintron scored valuable points for the team in both events, finishing 19th in the 200 freestyle with a personal best of 1:44.75 and 18th in the 100 backstroke with a personal best of 52.75.
The Sharks finished 23rd overall in New York State, a result that reflects the hard work and dedication of the athletes and the strong leadership of head coach Mike Miller.
“I remember two seasons ago when Johnny was a freshman, he barely missed the 500 free state cut,” Miller noted. “To see what he has accomplished after countless hours of work and commitment to swimming is inspiring. I am incredibly proud of him and can’t wait to see what he accomplishes next season.”
