Calhoun ASR Students Earn Awards at Science Fair

Nine sophomore students represented Sanford H. Calhoun's Advanced Science Research (ASR) Program at Molloy University’s Kathy Belton Science Fair on March 18, earning impressive recognition for their work.
As part of the ASR2 curriculum, students design and conduct their own independent “homegrown” research projects. At the competition, their work was evaluated by both college professors and high school educators.
Brandon Charles, Colton Hyland, and Sofia Maganuco earned first place in the Physics/Engineering category for their project, Driven by the Wind. Stephanie Garcia, Alexandra Grubb, and Irene Yax Lopez earned second place in the Microbiology/Immunology category for their project, Effects of Natural Antimicrobials on Bacterial Growth. Christine Barker, Jacob Ben-Dayan, and Uriel Augustus Stephen earned Honorable Mention in the Earth and Environmental Science category for their project, Which Common Plant Extract Provides the Most UV Protection.
The teams worked with Advanced Science Research Director Jennier Pefanis.
