Calhoun Art Show Features 9-Foot Student Sculpture

Visitors to the Calhoun High School annual art show on June 3 were greeted by an unforgettable sight: a nearly 9-foot sculpture created by junior Joseph Solorzano-Ruiz.
Created in AP 3D Art & Design under the guidance of art teacher Mike Goldberg, The Xenomorph Warrior was inspired by the iconic creature from the film Alien.
Solorzano-Ruiz spent eight months designing and constructing the piece using cardboard, cardstock paper, craft foam and other materials.
The student said he was drawn to the biomechanics of the character and enjoyed exploring how its mechanical and organic elements worked together through sculpture. The massive work was part of a larger series he presented at the exhibition.
The art show featured hallways filled with outstanding student creations, including pencil drawings, oil paintings, digital artwork, sculptures and mixed-media projects. Each piece reflected the creativity, dedication and countless hours of work invested by students throughout the school year.
The Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District extends its appreciation to art teacher Mike Goldberg and to Jessica Conte, Heather Deery, Joan Gonzalez, Arianna Partland, and Nancy Scott for their efforts in organizing and supporting the art show.
