Kennedy and Calhoun Student Councils Earn National Gold Council of Excellence Recognition

The Central High School District is proud to announce that the student councils at Kennedy High School and Calhoun High School have been named National Gold Councils of Excellence by the National Association of Student Councils (NASC).
The designation recognizes student councils that demonstrate the highest standards of leadership, service, citizenship and community engagement. To earn this level of recognition, a council must meet a highly rigorous set of national criteria, standing as a testament to the authentic, sustained efforts of its student leaders and members.
At Kennedy High School, the Student Government is led by faculty advisor Bradley Seidman and is uniquely composed of an Executive Board of more than 20 student leaders, six senators per grade level and a General Assembly of more than 100 students.
Throughout the school year, members organize events and initiatives that positively impact both the school community and organizations beyond its walls.
Among its many accomplishments, the Kennedy Student Government raised more than $10,000 through the Polar Plunge to benefit Special Olympics New York, organized a staff basketball game that raised an additional $1,000 for the Community Cupboard and coordinated the school's annual holiday food drive. Students also volunteered at the Long Island Center for Alzheimer's & Dementia and prepared and served dinner for more than 55 residents at the Ronald McDonald House.
In addition to its charitable efforts, the organization plays a central role in school culture by planning traditions such as Homecoming festivities, Jam the Gym, Safe Halloween, Class Night and the popular Dancing with the Teachers competition.
"Earning the Gold Council of Excellence Award is a reflection of a sustained commitment to integrity, hard work and authentic service," said Seidman. "With over 100 students actively participating in the club, our council doesn't just talk about leadership; they execute it regularly."
At Calhoun High School, the Student Council is led by faculty advisor Jason Boland and a dedicated group of student leaders who coordinate many of the school's signature events, including the Pep Rally, Homecoming Dance, Spirit Weeks and Class Night.
In recent years, the council has expanded its focus on community service, organizing food collections for the Community Cupboard, supporting coat drives and raising funds for charitable causes, including leukemia research.
"This recognition reflects our students' commitment to making a positive impact both within our school and throughout the community," added Boland. "Their dedication to service and school spirit makes this honor especially meaningful."
