Kennedy Student Publishes Workbook to Support Children of Separated Families
Sophia Rose Lancer, a senior at Kennedy High School, has published "The Road Between Two Homes: A Workbook for Kids When Their Family Changes," an interactive resource designed to help children navigating parental separation and life between two households.
Drawing on her own experience growing up between two homes following her parents' divorce, Lancer created the workbook to guide young readers through their emotions using reflection exercises, emotional support tools, and practical strategies.
Lancer was honored at the Sept. 2 Board of Education meeting with the Tomorrow's Leaders Today Award, presented on behalf of the New York State School Boards Association.
Board Trustee Dr. Nancy Kaplan presented the award, saying, "This recognition celebrates exceptional student-led leadership, initiative, and impact demonstrated through meaningful, independent action."
Dr. Kaplan noted that unlike honors recognizing district-led programs, this award "specifically honors students who take initiative on their own - using their time, talents, and determination to address a need, solve a problem, or make a difference in their school or community."
The workbook has been made available to guidance offices throughout the district, as well as being sold on Amazon.
