ENL Students Honor Veterans with Thank-You Letters

Students in Denise Schleith's English as a New Language (ENL) class at Merrick Avenue Middle School, together with members of the school’s International Buddy Club, practiced their English writing skills by composing heartfelt thank-you letters to veterans in honor of the May 4 Honor Flight.
In their letters, students expressed gratitude and admiration for the veterans’ service and sacrifice. One student wrote:
“I feel proud and honored to thank someone as courageous as you. You are the reason we can live in peace and enjoy the freedoms that so many around the world can only dream of. Your sacrifices, both big and small, have made a lasting difference. I hope you always feel how deeply appreciated you are. You are not just a veteran—you are a hero, a leader, and an inspiration. Thank you for everything you have given for us.”
Honor Flight is a national program that honors America’s veterans by flying them to Washington, D.C., to visit the memorials dedicated to their service and sacrifice. During the return flight home, veterans are surprised with “Mail Call” — bundles of letters and cards from family, friends, and community members, expressing appreciation for their service.
“This meaningful collaboration not only supported students' language development and personal expression but also reflected our district’s vision of building strong community connections through empathy, gratitude, and shared learning,” noted Schleith.
“The impressive involvement of students from Merrick Avenue Middle School is a reminder of how young people can make a real impact,” added Kristyn Pellegrini, the district’s ENL chairperson, who also serves as a World Languages chairperson. Their voices can bring comfort, pride, and joy to our nation’s heroes — a beautiful reflection of the kindness and character within our school community.”
