The Bellmore-Merrick CHSD Meadowbrook Alternative Program recently attended the Art of the Brick exhibit at the New York Hall of Science.  The exhibit contains “the world’s largest display of LEGO art.” Using only LEGO bricks (over 1,000,000), artist Nathan Sawaya created 100+ pieces for the exhibit.

Tiffany Rzempoluch’s AP Art History students were surprised to walk into the exhibit and recognize “re-imagined versions of some of the world’s most famous art masterpieces,” a number of which are on the list of 250 that they need to know for their exam in May. 

These included the statues Winged Victory of Samothrake, Augustus of Prima Porta, and the Great Sphinx at Giza, as well as the paintings The Scream, The Starry Night, and The Kiss. The exhibit included additional pieces of art that they are studying, such as the Venus de Milo, Michelangelo’s David, the Mona Lisa, American Gothic, Arrangement in Grey and Black No.1 (Whistler’s Mother), and The Arnolfini Portrait. The entire exhibit was a testament to creativity and the versatility of a simple tool.

When asked about their immediate recognition of famous pieces of art, Mrs. Rzempoluch’s students acknowledged that they have become more cultured over the past five months as a result of taking AP Art History. They also see that they are becoming better prepared for college with the rigor and responsibility the class demands.
