To celebrate Foreign Language Week, the Merrick Avenue Middle School World Languages Department sponsored several activities to enrich the curriculum, increase cultural awareness and nurture a love of learning language in our students.

A poster contest, themed “Multilingualism is a Superpower,” kicked off the week.

Winners included: first place: Jadyn Hakim-Italian 1B (Ms. DiChiara); second place: Anastasia Slobodov-Spanish 1B (Ms. Kelly) and third place: Hannah Samuels-Spanish 1B (Ms. Berry/Ms. Cummings).

“Each classroom entryway was decorated to represent a French, Italian or Spanish-speaking country,” said Rosa Kaplan, World Languages chairperson. “Students made contributions to a ‘word of the day’ activity and on Friday, dressed in the colors of their classroom’s country.”
